Not typically considered "demons" by the people of the Jade Empire, fox spirits are known as tricksters and teachers. Revered but not trusted, fox spirits are charged with showing people the error of their ways and teaching lessons that few ever forget. Fox spirits may change their form (even taking human form on occasion), offer gifts, and tell riddles, all in the service of pointing out the loopholes in life.
While most people do not regard fox spirits as "evil," few would ever turn their backs on one. Fox spirits can be just as vicious as any demon, and their tricks can wound more deeply than even the mighty tusks of the elephant demon. Those who displease a fox spirit might find curses on their families for generations, while those who curry a fox's favor may find themselves suddenly risen from honorable farmer to powerful noble in just a few years. The trick is to discover the fox's nature in time, leading many in the Empire to be respectful to everyone on the off chance they might be a fox in disguise.
